horticulturist with more than a decade of experience in public botanical gardens. He has since designed numerous plantings for public spaces including Fernwood Botanical Garden in Niles, Michigan; Allen Centennial Garden in Madison, Wisconsin; and most recently, The Lot Next Door at Botany & Co.
In addition, Ben has been cultivating a new home garden in South Bend since 2021, and it has quickly become a dynamic and vibrant plant community. This garden is an artful living laboratory exploring new plants and plant combinations for our region.

Design Philosophy
His passion for planting design was ignited during a summer internship with The Lurie Garden in downtown Chicago in 2009, which is where he fell in love with public landscapes and a naturalistic style of planting.

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions, and we suggest reviewing this information carefully before booking a consultation to ensure we’re a good fit for your needs & goals.
-
Planting design is an art and a science, and we approach it as such. Each project is unique, and we bring years of knowledge and experience to bear in plant selection and placement, ensuring the right plants are in the right place for them to thrive and succeed. We hand-pick our plant palettes for each project, and we love choosing a few “weird” things to make every project original.
We’ll begin with an on-site meeting to learn more about you, your site, and your goals. This will be followed by a concept plan and estimate based on our conversation. There is a $250 flat fee for this service paid upon booking.
From there, you can choose your own adventure, and Botany can be involved as little or as much as you’d prefer. We can help you source plants, we can help with layout and planting, and we can return to coach you through ongoing management.
Ultimately, our goal is to empower you to become a joyful and active participant in your own outdoors.

Choose your own adventure. We’re here to help. Ben, along with Botany & Co., offers the following services a-la-carte as part of our planting design practice:
Plant list development for new projects.
Plant procurement and sourcing.
Planting design and on-site layout, in addition to planting support if needed.
Post-planting management guidance and training.
-
Plant material is paid for up front, and this is required to confirm a collaboration. We’ll provide a detailed estimate following an initial site visit.
From there, we charge time and materials (T&M), which means paying for our time while on site as well as any materials used.
Ben’s time is billed at $150/hr, and any additional hands are billed at $50/hr.
-
Once we complete an installation, you are responsible for management and upkeep, including watering. As such, we do not offer plant guarantees.
-
Our primary planting seasons are fall (September-October) and spring (May-June). We prefer not to plant in July & August to maximize the chance of new plants succeeding. We will keep you informed of any changes in our proposed timeline.
Rain and intense heat slows down the work, makes extra messes, and adds to your bill so we are extra sensitive to that. We never dawdle, as we want to respect your time and treasure, too.
-
Plants are always estimated and invoiced PRIOR to install. We will bill you for time and additional materials upon completion of your project.

From the very beginning of Botany, we’ve been on a mission to change our relationship with our landscapes, and we centered our work on replacing conventional, high-input lawns with something better.
Since 2021, we’ve helped more than 60 neighbors convert their lawns into designed plant communities teaming with life and beauty.
We’ve planted thousands of plants over the past few years, but we’ve always been limited in the number of projects and partners we can take on in a given season.
Taught by our Founder and CEO, Ben, these workshops build upon not only our past few years of experience, they also draw upon more than a decade of experience in public botanical gardens and Ben’s own gardening practice. He’ll share the how, what, when, and why when it comes to committing to any scale of lawn conversion.
These workshops are intended to empower your DIY spirit, enabling and inspiring you to become a joyful and active participant in your own outdoors in a choose-your-own-adventure format.
Lawn Conversion workshops are taught in March and September each year.

September workshops conclude with twilight plant shopping in The Lot Next Door.
